The BioGS system at the international Carbon Removal symposium

KiRa Technology took part in the poster session of the international symposium Biomass-Based Carbon Removal: Pathways to Gigaton-Scale Industrial Transition, organised by the University of Bologna in Ravenna as part of the European project NET-Fuels (Horizon Europe).

The event brought together researchers, companies and stakeholders working on innovative solutions for CO₂ removal and the transition towards sustainable industrial models, with particular focus on the strategic role of biomass and bio-based technologies.

In this context, KiRa Technology presented its circular economy model based on the short biochar supply chain, built around the BioGS microcogenerator. The model proposes an innovative approach to biomass valorisation, in which the plant operator is not simply an energy consumer but becomes a true transformer of raw material.

Through the thermochemical conversion of biomass, BioGS simultaneously produces energy and biochar, turning agricultural and forestry residues into high-value resources. In this vision, energy production is a consequence of the biomass valorisation process, while biochar becomes a central element for the environmental and economic sustainability of the supply chain.

The model delivers concrete benefits for all actors involved: competitively priced biomass supply, high-quality biochar production and new economic opportunities along the entire value chain. At the same time, it promotes the decarbonisation of production processes and stable carbon sequestration in the soil, contributing to European climate targets.

Participation in the symposium was an important opportunity to engage with the world of international research and innovation, confirming the growing interest in solutions that integrate energy production, sustainable biomass management and atmospheric carbon removal.

KiRa Technology thus continues its commitment to developing technologies that combine environmental sustainability, energy efficiency and economic value for local territories and communities.

BioGS Char - Agricultural amendment for organic use

KiRa Technology is now also an authorised producer of soil amendments for agricultural use, and the biochar produced by the micro-CHP units under test at our facility has a registered name: "BioGS Char".

Each kilogram of BioGS Char contains 0.97 kg of stable carbon and sequesters 3.5 kg of CO₂ equivalent.

Each BioGS-1.0 installed can produce up to 6 kg of biochar per day.

A new piece of the energy communities puzzle

The AIEL Energia dal Legno journal publishes an article on KiRa Technology and the role of biomass microcogeneration in renewable energy communities (REC).

The BioGS-1.0 is presented as the 'missing piece of the puzzle': a programmable, carbon-negative generator able to deliver electricity and heat continuously, complementing the intermittency of solar panels and ideal for truly self-sufficient energy communities.

Gold Innovation Award in the Biochar category at Bio360

In front of 5,853 visitors from 37 countries and among 427 exhibitors, BioGS-1.0 by KiRa Technology won the Gold Innovation Award in the BIOCHAR category at the 2025 edition of Bio360, held in Nantes (France). Participation was co-financed under the Digital Export Grant 2024-2025.

The jury recognised in BioGS-1.0 a solution capable of tackling a complex technical challenge: through advanced pyrolytic gasification, the micro-CHP system produces 1 kWe of electricity and heat from diverse biomass feedstocks, including agricultural residues. The biochar generated has a carbon content exceeding 90%, making it valuable both as a soil amendment and as a carbon sink for the stable removal of CO₂ from the atmosphere, resulting in net negative emissions.

The jury's citation highlighted the growing number of units operating in demanding conditions and remote locations, evidence of concrete market validation that positions BioGS-1.0 as a technology ready to make a significant impact in small-scale applications.

PIGergy: creating value and reducing emissions from pig slurry

KiRa Technology took part in PIGergy, a joint research project funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme under ERA-Net Smart Energy Systems. In partnership with GlasPort Bio (Ireland), the project developed an integrated system for closing the loop in the pig farming industry: a natural antimicrobial additive developed by GlasPort Bio reduces methane emissions from pig slurry by up to 96% and ammonia by 43%, while the treated biomass is used as fuel in the BioGS-1.0 micro-CHP. The system produces 1 kW of electrical power and 7 kW of thermal power at over 95% overall efficiency, simultaneously generating biochar, a carbon-rich soil amendment that sequesters approximately 100 g of CO2 per kilogram of processed biomass.
